Goodbye Razor Bumps and Burns

The thing that i hate the most with shaving my legs are those pesky bumps i get from shaving. Its really irritating and embarrassing. Here are some tips to have a better shave and reducing those irritating razor bumps.

What is razor burn?

Razor burn (aka razor bumps) is the result of shaving off puckered hair follicles and irregular skin. It is often accompanied by ingrown hairs (Tips on how to get rid of ingrown hairs) and is caused by inadequate shaving preparation and poor technique. This article will show you how to treat and prevent razor burn.

Razor burn treatments

Since razor burn usually results in scabbing and raised skin, the best way to get rid of it is to allow it to heal before shaving again. There are of course, additional steps you can take to speed up the healing process:

Do:

  • Use a mild exfoliant that contains salicylic acid daily. This will slough off old, dead surface skin that otherwise could clog up your pores and limit oxygen to the effected areas. Do not scrub razor-burned skin. (ow!)
  • Use aloe vera or tea tree oil creams and sprays. They will speed up your recovery and soothe that raw feeling that accompanies razor burn.
  • Shave carefully until it heals, switch to a razor with a single-blade or wire guard for a while. The shave won’t be close, but you won’t be slicing your skin up before it can heal either. (Learn how to get rid of razor bumps)
  • If you continue shaving, combine these steps with the preventative steps in the next section.

Do not:

  • Use any products containing alcohol - it will dry out your skin and increase irritation.
  • Scrub or scratch razor burned skin. It will increase irritation and the risk of infection.
  • Apply colognes or perfumes to razor burned skin.

  • Prepare your skin and hair for the shave:

    • Bathe and exfoliate first. You can use a loofah, shower puff, or a chemical exfoliant that contains salicylic acid to remove dirt, oil and dead skin so the razor will glide smoothly and evenly.
    • Cover the area to be shaved with conditioner or skin lotion and let it sit for a few minutes prior to shaving - don’t rub it into the skin. This will soften the hair and make the shave much easier. Don’t let it sit longer than five minutes either as your skin will start to absorb the moisture and puff up, keeping you from getting a close shave. Alternatively, you can soak some wash cloths with the hot, steamy water and apply them to your skin for a few minutes.
    • Trade in your shaving cream or gel for some old-fashioned shaving soap, a mug and a badger brush. These soaps are less expensive, provide superior lubrication, and the use of the brush stands the hair up for a superior shave. Find them at your local supermarket
    • Shaving technique:

      • Make sure your blade is clean and sharp.
      • Shave in slow, small strokes tapping the razor under hot water to clean it between each stroke. A blade full of hair won’t sit evenly against the skin.
      • Loose skin should be held taut - but not stretched.
      • Apply only as much pressure as is needed.
      • Shave with the grain as much as is possible to achieve the closeness you desire.
      • If you must double back over an area, apply more lubricant (soap or cream) first.
      •
      •  Post-shave skin care:

        • Splash cold water or run an ice cube over your freshly shaven skin to close up your pores. Ice works just as well as alcohol and will not dry out your skin.
        • Apply an aloe vera (For other uses of aloe vera, read 12 wondrous benefits of aloe vera) or tea tree oil balm to moisturize, soothe and cool your skin.
If after following the previous steps you still find yourself getting razor burn and ingrown hairs, consider experimenting with alternative hair removal methods. There are creams and powders that dissolve hair as well as waxes and sugar solutions that pluck it. If you’re set on shaving, see if your barber or stylist will teach you how to shave with a straight razor.

Latest Craze

My latest craze on makeup items has to be the Tokidoki makeup line in Sephora. I am buying each thing bit by bit, and so far it doesnt disappoint.

The characters and logos of Italian artisit Simone Legno’s Japanese inspired, super cute brand, tokidoki, have been stamped on everything from skateboard decks to pillow cases. And now on our faces! Thanks to a 70 piece makeup collection available exclusively in Sephora.

Simone was truely smart about selling makeup from his tokidoki line, although it wasn’t the first time, he also did a callabo with smashbox makeup. He was smart to do his own tokidoki makeup line, cause now it’s selling like crazy. And the packaging is excellent and smart. It truely attracts the younger girls and ladies. And I’m one of them. The pigment of the eyeshadows and liners are excellent and the gloss and lip stains are cute and simple.

So I had a fun doing a makeup test on my friend. I used sheer cover all over her face. Her eyeshadow was all urban decay using copper, green, and black shades. Using benefit’s bad girl mascara. And her lips is Mac and over lapping it with a sephora brand lipstick with a little more pink.

This is just a simple 411 to show her that you can use different colors to achieve a smokey look. The key to this look is always blending the colors together to make it look less harsh.

SMOOTH AWAY

So you’ve seen the info commercial for Smooth Away, a hair removal device that does not require you to shave or wax. I’ve bought this product to see what’s it all about and how great this product works.

I know for a fact that they now sell this in stores practically everywhere like Walmart.

But I say stay away from this product, it’s a load of junk and you will just be wasting your money. It works, but it only works great for people who have fine hair, horrible for people who have thick hair.

Yes, it exfoliates your skin, but that’s about it. And not using it correctly can really burn your skin and give you a rash if not used with precaution. Worse place to use this device is the upper lip and under arms, since it’s the most sensitive part of your body. If you do not do it properly you will scrape your skin giving you a burn that will give you discomfort throughout the day.

I say this is by far the worse product to remove hair. The only plus side is that it makes your legs smooth, but can leave some hair behind.

this video if from bubzbeauty on youtube, and she is describing why bb cream is sufficiant on the face. i use this brand of bb cream and i love it and i have seen improvments on my skin.

i use bb cream as a light base for my face, a very light amount all over my face, because my face tends to become oily throughout the day. and i put my sheer cover on top of it to blend in my skin tone better.

i like this product alot, it didn’t work over night, but throughout the weeks i’ve seen less scars on my face and made it appear smother throughout the usage of it.

it’s been months using this product and i think it’s great for asian skin, since we tend to get scars or post acne marks easier when we break out because of our skin tone.

i got my tube from ebay, very affordable. i think i paid $13-$15 for the smaller tube, but retail is like $30 or so.

SIMPLE FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Here are some information that you can carry onto your everyday regimen. These facts are important to know so you can always have radiant skin. Preventing further  damage to your skin is a good way to practice in the long run.Your skin will thank you.

*COFFEE

-Caffeine dehydrates you, leaving your dermis (skin) parched. This forces it into oil producing overdrive in an attempt to get back to normal, meaning more zits. Also, since caffeine is a stimulant it gives everything in your system a jolt, including those oil glands.

*SMOKING

-You already know the health risks of smoking, but did you know it makes your skin look dull and lifeless? Puffing cigarettes stops oxygen from getting to the surface of the skin so all those blood vessels that like to stay pumped up and pink get dried up. Because of this, any nicks or picked zits take longer to heal, and it’s more likely that a poked pimple will leave a scar.

*YOUR EYES

-The skin around your eyes is much thinner than the rest of your face and contains fewer oil glands. And with all that blinking, laughing, and finger rubbing, this area is one of the first to show wrinkles when you get older. NEVER tug or pull your eyes when putting on EYE MAKEUP, you’re just promoting PRE-MATURE WRINKLES on your face.

*WHITEHEADS

-Since scrubs contain small granules that remove pore-clogging dead skin, they can be too harsh on acne. If you have a whitehead on your face, the grains could cause you to rub the top off of the pimple and spread the bacteria from the zit across your face, which could lead to more breakouts.

*FOR THE YOUNGER LADIES

-The majority of sun damage happens during the first 15 years of life. There’s also more than enough data to show that single sunburns from childhood will come back to haunt you. So use anything from makeup or moisturizers that contain any spf.

LIPS 101

Lip color is one of the easiest and quickest ways to play up your mood, whether it’s flirty, dramatic, or ultracool.

PASTEL GLOSS

Sparkling sheer pink lips are a surefire way to pretty up your look, no matter what you’re coloring.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

-Lip pencil that matches your lip color

-Sheer pale pink lip gloss

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

-Define lips and keep gloss from bleeding by lining them with a lip pencil that matches your lip color. Use your middle finger to blend the color inward so there are no visible lines.

-Apply a dollop of gloss with your fingertip, a brush, or a sponge tipped wand to the center of your lips. Gently press your lips together and smush back and forth to distribute color. Now add a bit more gloss to the outer edges.

-Make your pout shine even more with a touch of shimmery gloss right in the center of your top and bottom lip.

RED LIPS

Paint your lips when you want to make a statement without saying a word.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

-Creamy red lipstick

-Red lip liner that matches your lipstick

-Lip brush

-Tissues

-Translucent powder

-Powder brush

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

-Since red cream lipstick can be a attention grabber, they’ve got to look perfectly neat. Use a lip liner that matches your lipstick and line your lips. And with the same pencil fill in your lips

-For extra precision, use a lip brush to apply the lipstick for better control.

-Blot lips with tissue, or dust over your lips with a translucent powder to set in the color.

-On a special note stick your finger in your mouth while your mouth is wrapped around your finger to remove red lipstick in your inner mouth that can stick onto your teeth and have red lipstick all over your teeth.

NATURAL MATTE LIPS

Wear this look day or night when you want to feel like the hippest girl in the room. This works best when paired with natural looking eye makeup.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

-Lip balm

-Flesh-tone lip liner

-Lip brush

-Matte flesh tone lipstick

-Clear gloss (optional)

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

-Since matte lips can be drying, before applying a matte lipstick, condition your lips with an emollient balm so it’s chap and flake free. If dead skin still lingers, gently exfoliate with a warm, wet wash cloth, which you can wipe back and forth over your lips for about 30 seconds.

-So the look is neat and stays put, line and fill in your lips with a light brown to nude lip pencil.

-Using a lip brush apply a matte lip color that blends into your natural kin tone.

-If the matte look is a little harsh to your taste try adding a layer of clear gloss.

PERFECT EYEBROWS

The perfect brows are essential to your look. It balances your whole features, especially when your makeup is all done. Here are some easy steps on making your eyebrows perfect and fabulous.

The correct position of the beginning point of the eyebrow (where the eyebrow should start) is directly over the inner corner of the eye – with possible modifications.

The possible modification of the beginning point of the eyebrow is based on the person’s eye set, that is whether the eyes are well set, close set, or wide set.

How might one modify the beginning point of the eyebrow? Great question….The answer is based on the client’s Eye Set, the beginning point can be moved outward by removing eyebrow hair at the beginning point, or the beginning point can move inward by growing in hairs at the beginning point.

The ending point of the eyebrow. The rule that guides the ending point is a long-standing rule and one that has not changed over time. The correct ending point should be the intersection point along the brow line that occurs when a straight-edged object is placed at the base of the nose, intersects the outer corner of the eye, and finds the intersection point along the eyebrow.

The arch of the eyebrow. The current, long-standing rule regarding where the arch should be along the brow is obsolete and should no longer be followed. The obsolete rule uses the outer rim of the iris (obsolete rule) to locate the arch.

Trimming your eyebrows will also enhance on how groomed your eyebrows are. Use an eyebrow pencil, but make sure to blend it off with a brush to not make it look too harsh. Or use a powder and use a wax base or gel to set in the powder. Also there are eyebrow tints and gels for those perfect brows.

-good luck
